We booked a last minute Disney cruise in August of 2022. We decided to take a chance with an outside tour company to hopefully see some bears and we are thanking ourselves each time we look at our pictures and videos that we went on our adventure with John.

Being a native of the area, John told us not only the history of the island but personal stories from his time living there. John knew the best spots where the bears normally inhabit and his insight did not disappoint. We not only saw several adult bears but we got the privilege of seeing two cubs as well! John also took us to some picture perfect viewing spots to see the landscape, flowers and mountains of this beautiful region and even showed us some wild leaves that can be brewed into tea. You could tell that John is extremely passionate about sharing his home with you and he had a very high respect for the land and all that share this beautiful area.

I am looking forward to touring with John again in 2024!

You cannot go wrong with this tour!  John and Marilyn are seasoned guides who will inform and entertain you with their knowledge of the fauna and flora of their native land.

We were picked up just a short walk from the pier and toured with one other couple in a very comfortable van. We saw 4 bears, one right in the middle of the road while we were outside the van watching another in a river! We also saw a bald eagle as well as clams releasing the air at low tide. John and Marilyn educated us about different forms of vegetation and picked edible berries for us to sample! The scenery was absolutely spectacular, and we had ample opportunities to leave the van and experience the terrain firsthand. This was by far the best tour my husband and I took on our Alaska Cruise.

Do yourself a favor and book this tour. You will be glad you did. Not only did we make a magical memory of this amazing place, but we made two new friends in John and Marilyn!!

We had the opportunity to go on a brown bear excursion with John & Marilyn at our stop in Hoonah Alaska. This excursion was the most memorable one that we had during our Alaskan cruise of all the excursions we had! It was kid friendly and also very enjoyable for adults! My sons were pretty young (ages 4 & 7) but John & Marilyn were very accommodating and made this experience very enjoyable & memorable for all of us. We encountered many bears in their own environment, hunting for fish & hanging out in the wilderness. And in the meantime, we heard some very interesting stories about Hoonah history. We’ll never forget the experience John & Marilyn gave us and are so grateful we booked with them! I would highly recommend booking with them. You won’t regret it!

We had not booked an excursion when we arrived so we were sooo lucky to run into John in Hoonah. He was so personable and available. His personality instantly made us sign up for the tour. We loved every minute of the tour. He spoke about Hoonah and his family. He had us in mesmerized by his stories. We could not get enough of them. We saw bears only a few feet away within fifteen minutes of the beginning of the tour. We even had an eagle land a few feet away from the van to eat his fish. In the last fifteen minutes of the tour, we saw a momma bear with her cub. It was amazing. It was an experience of a lifetime that we will talk about forever. We will never forget his kindness and his stories. He took us to amazing areas in Hoonah. It is a beautiful place. We wish we could have spent all day with him. We will be forever grateful for the time we spent with him. Thank you John from the bottom of our hearts. You should book with wildernessislandtours and ask for John. You won’t regret it.
